Doha convenes Islamic finance's AI reckoning

The 12th Doha Islamic Finance Conference convened on 16 June 2026 under the theme 'Islamic Finance in the Age of Agentic Systems' — the industry's first major gathering devoted to what autonomous AI means for Shariah-governed money. The agenda, organised by Bait Al-Mashura with Dukhan Bank and Qatar's Ministry of Commerce and Industry, was fourfold: intelligent systems inside Islamic financial institutions, the evolution of endowments (waqf) under agentic systems, virtual influencers and Islamic finance, and zakat administration in an agentic environment. The waqf and zakat sessions are the ones to watch. These are the Muslim world's native civic-finance institutions, chronically undermanaged, and software agents that can track assets, enforce deed conditions and distribute obligations transparently address their actual failure mode — administration, not intention. The open question the conference leaves is governance: an autonomous agent executing financial decisions raises fiqh questions (of agency, liability and intent) that the scholarship has barely begun to formalise. That work is now urgent.
