ICESCO and the King Faisal Center plan joint work on manuscripts and a Transoxiana studies chair

The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies met at the Center's headquarters in Riyadh on 17 September. ICESCO Director-General Dr Salem bin Mohammed Al Malik and the Center's Secretary-General, Princess Maha bint Mohammed Al Faisal Al Saud, discussed cooperation in Islamic studies and manuscript preservation, joint research to protect the scientific and cultural heritage of the Islamic world, and ICESCO's programmes and initiatives. A proposal was raised for an academic chair in Transoxiana studies, examining the region's history and its figures' contributions to Islamic civilisation. Both sides agreed to work toward a formal cooperation agreement in the near future; no signing date or chair details were announced. Why it matters: preservation and scholarship last when they are carried by standing institutions with agreements, budgets and chairs rather than one-off meetings.
