RE Today launches 'Understanding Muslims, Understanding Islam' classroom resources
RE Today has launched a new set of classroom resources, Understanding Muslims, Understanding Islam, at the British Muslim Heritage Centre in Manchester. Designed for pupils aged 5 to 14, the material draws on theology, history and sociology to help pupils interpret sources, ask well-founded questions and see how different Muslims practise their faith in Britain and around the world. It was developed with academics, teachers and more than 60 Muslims. The resources respond to gaps flagged after the 2024 Ofsted religious education subject report, and a 2020 poll by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education found that a quarter of primary and secondary teachers lacked confidence in teaching Islam. Why it matters: representation in the curriculum is built through materials that teachers can actually use, and co-production with the communities being described is a model worth watching.
