The Waqf Fund buys a £1.9m Solihull high-street property to fund charity from rent
The Waqf Fund, a registered charity subsidiary of Human Appeal, completed its fourth UK property acquisition in under two years on 15 September: a £1.9 million freehold retail unit on Solihull High Street, leased to a Danish homeware retailer with more than 70 UK stores. The rent is projected at £150,000 a year, all of it directed to humanitarian projects. The purchase takes the fund's UK portfolio to £5.6 million, and every asset to date is reported as exceeding the 7% annual return target. The structure follows the classical waqf model, comparable to the college endowments of Oxford and Cambridge: donor capital is preserved in real estate while 100% of the yield goes to charitable causes. Donors choose from thirteen causes, with the strongest interest in orphans and clean water. Why it matters: it is a working example of a charity converting one-off gifts into permanent, self-renewing income, which is the core of financial self-reliance for the sector.
